Emotion at the top
«I cannot describe
the admirable and changeable view that one sees from the Bastille…»
Stendhal, the most famous native of Grenoble, denigrated his town
a lot more than he praised it. That just shows how heartfelt is that
compliment!
A captivating panorama
on the town and its mountain setting
On the foreground, and if you lean over, looking down, you’ll
see the Isère, a tumultuous river running at the feet of the
Bastille, last northern rock of the Chartreuse massif.
On the left bank, behind the cable-car station: small passages, places
and garden of the medieval Grenoble.
Beyond, the flattest town of France lays in a basin, surrounded,
in the west (on your right) by the Vercors Massif, and by the peaks
of the Belledone chain in the east.
When the sun sets and the lights go down in the city, the view is
outstanding.
